India Travel FAQs

Yes, most travelers, including those from the USA, require a visa to enter India. The most convenient option is the Indian e-Visa, which can be applied for online prior to departure. Tourist e-Visas are typically available for 30 days, 1 year, or 5 years, depending on your travel plans and nationality.

We recommend applying at least 2–4 weeks before departure to allow sufficient processing time. Travelers must also ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their travel dates and has sufficient blank pages.

Immersion Journeys can also complete your visa application on your behalf for an additional fee. Please contact us for more information.

For a first-time India tour, we recommend at least 10 days to experience the country comfortably. India is vast and culturally diverse, and a well-paced itinerary ensures you can explore without feeling rushed.

Shorter trips of 6–7 days typically focus on the Golden Triangle, Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, offering a strong introduction to North India. With 10–12 days, travellers can extend into Rajasthan, visiting destinations such as Udaipur, Jodhpur, or Jaisalmer for deeper cultural immersion. A 12–14 day itinerary allows time to combine heritage destinations with a tiger safari in one of India’s premier national parks.

South India itineraries typically require 8–10 days to explore Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and surrounding regions. For travellers with more time, two-week journeys combining North and South India offer the most comprehensive experience.

The best time to visit India is generally October through March, when temperatures are cooler and conditions are ideal for sightseeing across much of the country.

North India and Rajasthan are best visited from October to March, while tiger safaris operate from October to June, with April and May offering excellent wildlife sightings. South India, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu, can be visited year-round, though December through March typically offers the most pleasant weather.

Immersion Journeys carefully plans each itinerary based on seasonal conditions to ensure the best travel experience.

While independent travel in India is possible, most first-time visitors find that traveling with a private guide significantly enhances the experience. India’s scale, cultural diversity, and vibrant energy can be overwhelming without local expertise, particularly when navigating busy cities, historic sites, and regional logistics.

A private guide provides valuable cultural insights, manages logistics, and helps create meaningful interactions with local communities. Additionally, having a dedicated driver and guide allows you to travel comfortably and efficiently between destinations.

Immersion Journeys specializes in private guided India tours, offering expert local guides, seamless logistics, and carefully curated experiences that allow you to explore India with confidence and ease.

India is generally safe for travellers, particularly when visiting well-established destinations and traveling with experienced local guides. Millions of visitors travel to India each year to explore its cultural landmarks, wildlife reserves, and historic cities.

The destinations featured in Immersion Journeys’ India tours are well-developed for tourism and supported by excellent hospitality infrastructure. As with any destination, we recommend sensible precautions and following local guidance.

Travelling with Immersion Journeys provides additional comfort through private transportation, expert guides, and 24/7 support throughout your journey.

India’s Golden Triangle is the country’s most popular travel route, connecting three of North India’s most iconic cities: Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. This classic itinerary provides an ideal introduction to India’s history, architecture, and cultural heritage, making it particularly well suited for first-time visitors.

Delhi, India’s capital, offers a fascinating blend of Mughal monuments, colonial architecture, and vibrant markets. Agra is home to the world-famous Taj Mahal, as well as the impressive Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah. Jaipur, known as the Pink City, features hilltop forts, royal palaces, and colourful bazaars that showcase Rajasthan’s regal heritage.

The Golden Triangle is typically explored over 6–8 days and is often extended into Rajasthan or combined with a tiger safari. Immersion Journeys’ Golden Triangle tours are thoughtfully designed to provide a comfortable and enriching first introduction to India.

India is the best destination in the world to see wild Bengal tigers, with more than 70% of the global tiger population found across the country’s national parks and wildlife reserves.

Some of the best places to see tigers in India include:

  • Ranthambore National Park (Rajasthan): one of the most accessible reserves, set around a historic fort
  • Bandhavgarh National Park (Madhya Pradesh): known for high tiger density
  • Kanha National Park (Madhya Pradesh): scenic landscapes and strong wildlife sightings
  • Pench National Park (Madhya Pradesh): inspiration for The Jungle Book

Tiger safaris typically take place in open 4×4 vehicles with expert naturalist guides. The best time for tiger sightings is from October to June, when national parks are open and wildlife congregate near water sources.

Immersion Journeys’ India tiger safari tours combine wildlife experiences with India’s cultural highlights for a balanced and rewarding itinerary.

Gujarat is a culturally rich and highly diverse state in western India, known for its heritage, wildlife, and unique landscapes. It is one of India’s most underrated travel regions and Immersion Journeys was featured in National Geographic Traveler’s 50 Tours of a Lifetime for our tour in this region.

Highlights include Gir National Park, home to the world’s last Asiatic lions; the vast white salt desert of the Rann of Kutch, which comes alive during the Rann Utsav festival (November–February); the 11th-century Modhera Sun Temple; and the intricate stepwells of Patan.

Gujarat is also renowned for its living craft traditions, including textiles, embroidery, and artisan heritage, making it one of India’s most culturally distinctive regions. Immersion Journeys includes Gujarat in select luxury itineraries for travellers seeking something truly off the beaten path

North India and South India offer two very different travel experiences, each shaped by distinct histories, architecture, and cultural traditions.

North India is best known for its Mughal and Rajput heritage, including the Taj Mahal, Delhi’s historic monuments, and Rajasthan’s royal cities such as Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur. It is the most popular region for first-time visitors and offers dramatic forts, palaces, and desert landscapes.

South India is more tropical and relaxed, with ancient Dravidian temple cities such as Madurai and Hampi, Kerala’s backwaters and spice plantations, Karnataka’s wildlife reserves, and long coastal stretches along the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.

Immersion Journeys designs itineraries that either focus deeply on one region or combine both, offering travellers a complete picture of India’s cultural and geographical diversity.

Travel in India typically involves a combination of private vehicles, trains, and domestic flights. Private drivers are often used for regional travel, while flights and trains connect longer distances.

Heritage hotels in India are historic palaces, forts, and royal residences that have been converted into luxury accommodations. Many of these properties once belonged to maharajas and noble families.

Staying in heritage hotels offers a unique opportunity to experience India’s royal past while enjoying modern comfort. Rajasthan is particularly known for exceptional heritage stays.

Immersion Journeys incorporates carefully selected heritage hotels into many India itineraries.

Indian cuisine is extraordinarily regional and diverse. In Rajasthan, we recommend trying dal baati churma and laal maas (red meat curry). Gujarat’s thali tradition offers a lavish spread of vegetarian dishes including dhokla, khandvi, and Gujarati kadhi. Kerala’s cuisine is characterised by coconut milk, freshwater fish curries, and appam. Delhi and Agra’s Mughal-influenced food features extraordinary biryanis, kebabs, and kormas. In Gujarat, the street food of Ahmedabad is world-class. Immersion Journeys’ guides always direct clients to the best dining experiences – from palace restaurants to authentic local kitchens.

India is generally a conservative country and modest dress is both appropriate and respectful, particularly at religious sites. Covering shoulders and knees when entering temples, mosques, and gurdwaras is required. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are essential during warm months; a warm layer is needed in the evenings in Rajasthan during winter. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Immersion Journeys provides destination-specific dress code guidance and cultural etiquette tips to all clients before departure.
