Southern Africa Travel FAQs

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural phenomena. It is a vast inland river delta in northern Botswana that floods seasonally, creating a labyrinth of channels, lagoons, and islands teeming with wildlife. It is accessible only by small aircraft or traditional mokoro (dugout canoe), which adds to its sense of remoteness and exclusivity. The Delta supports huge concentrations of elephant, hippo, crocodile, lion, leopard, wild dog, and hundreds of bird species. It is consistently rated among the world’s top safari destinations and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The best time to visit Southern Africa for safari is generally the dry season from May to October, when wildlife viewing is at its peak across most destinations including South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia. During this period, thinner vegetation and limited water sources cause animals to gather around rivers and waterholes, making game viewing easier and more consistent.

In Botswana, this is also the best time for safari experiences in the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park, with peak flood conditions in the Delta between June and August offering excellent mokoro and boat safaris.

The green season (November to April) brings lush landscapes, dramatic skies, and excellent birdwatching, along with fewer crowds and lower rates. While wildlife is slightly more dispersed due to rainfall, it is an excellent time for photography and seeing newborn animals.

Namibia offers one of Africa’s most visually dramatic and distinctive safari experiences. Its landscapes are unlike anywhere else on the continent: with the ancient red dunes of Sossusvlei, the surreal salt pans of Etosha (home to lion, black rhino, cheetah, and elephant), the haunting Skeleton Coast, and the vast open plains of Damaraland where desert-adapted elephants roam. Namibia is also ideal for photography due to extraordinary light and dramatic scenery. Immersion Journeys designs private guided Namibia tours that reveal the country’s full spectrum, from wildlife, to culture, to stark natural beauty.

Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (“The Smoke That Thunders”), is one of the world’s largest and most spectacular waterfalls, located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The Zimbabwe side offers the most complete and panoramic views of the Falls, making it ideal for first-time visitors. The Zambia side provides a closer, more immersive experience with access to the water’s edge during certain seasons and adventure activities such as a visit to the Devil’s Pool.

Most travellers choose to visit both sides for the full experience. Immersion Journeys designs itineraries that include both Zimbabwe and Zambia for a comprehensive Victoria Falls visit.

Southern Africa is home to all of the Big Five across its various destinations. Botswana’s Chobe region and Okavango Delta support some of Africa’s largest elephant herds. Namibia’s Etosha National Park is one of the best places on the continent to observe black rhino and cheetah. Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park is renowned for enormous lion prides and wild dog sightings. These regions are also home to hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, and hundreds of bird species. Wild dogs (the African painted dog), one of Africa’s rarest predators, are regularly spotted in Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Yes! A Southern Africa multi-country safari tour is one of the best ways to experience the region’s diversity. Many of our journeys combine destinations such as Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and Namibia’s desert landscapes, creating a seamless itinerary that showcases dramatically different ecosystems in a single trip. Our team designs these itineraries so that travel between countries is smooth and each destination complements the next.
